Caitanya Mahaprabhu said “Service to the vaishnavas is the highest religious principle.”

Although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Caitanya played the role of the devotee just to teach us how to conduct our lives as devotees. In Navadvipa sometimes Lord Caitanya would bow down to His devotees and take the dust from their lotus feet. Sometimes He would wash their clothes with His own hands. Sometimes, on the bank of the Ganges, He would fold their clothes. Sometimes He would bring them clay from the Ganges to use as tilaka. Sometimes He would see devotees carrying loads and He would take the load upon Himself and would carry it. In these and many other ways, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu taught by His own example that the highest of all religious principles is the service to the Vaishnavas.

The Need for Devotee Care Program

Lord Caitanya compared Krishna Consciousness to cultivating the seed of bhakti in the field of the heart. Thus it is vital for leaders of Lord Sri Caitanya’s movement to see that the devotees’ hearts gets cultivated in a sustainable way wherein they remain faithful and enthused throughout their lives.

Srila Prabhupada was a perfect leader. He could push his disciples to get big results but at the same time his love, compassion and care would nourish, sustain and bring the highest joy to the hearts of his followers. He profoundly cared for each devotee who came to his society and expected his leaders to do so on his behalf.

After Srila Prabhupada’s times in course of fulfilling projects, many devotees’ hearts were broken. They felt uncared for. People who had come to Srila Prabhupada’s society with innocent faith and enthusiasm later suffered emotional anxiety due to neglect, feeling they had been cheated or rejecting ISKCON in bitterness.

This has made ISKCON leaders take serious responsibility to be caretakers of devotees and establish a program of "Devotee Care". Srila Prabhupada exclaimed, “I have shed buckets of blood for each and every devotee!!!” Thus each devotee is a valuable asset of ISKCON and cultivation, nourishment and care of every devotee are the most important activities of this movement.
